Hello, I am Samaria. I am also a fellow
RT wanna be. Like Skyler, I completed my first semester of
Respiratory Program, I have a desire to be a RT. But my circumstances
are quite different than Skyler's. I am a mother of 2 boys, which
needless to say complicates things a bit more. I also do not have
prior medical experience like Skyler. My desire to become a
Respiratory Therapist comes from the desire to help others, I applied
to the program unsure of what to expect or if I would even get in but
to my surprise I was accepted. After my first semester of Respiratory
school, I am glad I was accepted and that it is something I have
followed through with. I look forward to next semester and what else
there is to learn. I believe my perspective on the program can be
helpful to mothers that want to go back to school but are unsure as
to how it will all work out. I can begin by telling you to start with
just trying!
A blog about the experiences of two respiratory students (Skyler and Samaria). Both of us have completely different views on RT and RT school.

Drama
One piece of advice I can give to aspiring respiratory students is DO NOT get in the mix of RT School Drama! I can say from experience that no matter what, someone is going to be talking about someone else, and there is nothing that you can do about that. A disadvantage of RT school is the class size is usually very small compared to nursing programs, so everyone is in everyone Else's business. This makes it not only hard, but impossible to just "blend" in. If someone says something about you don't feel that you should make a big deal about it! If you just have to confront them make sure you do it AWAY from school, and most definitely away from any clinical site! Early on in the program you need to decide who your friends are, and who you need to avoid. One thing to remember is that you are in a professional program, and you are expected to act like a professional. One thing that I think people often forget is this is not high school, it is not about socializing, making new friends, or even having fun. You are here because you want to be a RT , and usually people who are still mentally in high school are the first ones out of the program. The attitude that I carry into class is I am one more day closer to finishing regardless of who is here, or who likes me. One last thing NEVER EVER get involved in drama at clinicals! Did you know that RT directors can refuse to let you do clinicals at there hospital? Did you know that RT directors are looking for future employees when you are at clinicals?

Re-Entry Exam
Well right now I am studying for our "re-entry" exam. In case your wondering what that is, essentially it is an exam that covers everything we leaned "skill wise" last semester. Which really defeats the purpose of having to take a final exam if your just going to have to take the same test not even 3 weeks later! Anyways, I am so nervous about this test for some reason even though I passed my finals, I just am afraid I am going to forget something of great importance. What a way to enjoy a Christmas break!

Why Respiratory
One thing that I am constantly asked is "why did you choose Respiratory Therapy". I don't believe that I have one simple answer. I had the opportunity to shadow RTs ( and many other professions) at the hospital I volunteered at, and was able to get a inside look at the profession. My mother and Grandmother are both nurses, and I knew I didn't want to do that. However, I still wanted to do something were I could be a part of the team, care for actually ill patients, and support myself financially so I just worked up the nerve and applied to the RT program and was accepted on my first try! Although I had my doubts at first, now that I am in school I cant imagine myself doing anything else.
Hello World!
Hi! My name is Skyler! I am a Respiratory Therapy Student, and I have just completed my first semester. I am starting this blog with the intentions of sharing my experiences with respiratory school and the RT profession. I hope to be able to post something on here a couple of times a week, and possibly have one of my classmates post on here too. If you have any questions just give me a holler!
